KOREAN DRAMA: Boys Over Flowers

Hardworking Geum Jan-di (Ku Hye-sun) attends the exclusive Shinhwa High School through a scholarship she obtains. She finds her shallow, privileged classmates unbearable, especially the notorious F4, consisting of four rich and handsome men: the arrogant Gu Jun-pyo (Lee Min-ho), the quiet Yoon Ji-hoo (Kim Hyun-joong), the charming So Yi-jung (Kim Bum), and the flirtatious Song Woo-bin (Kim Joon). The series is the fifth television adaptation of the manga following the Taiwanese ‘Meteor Garden’ and its sequel ‘Meteor Garden II’. Wait,

Wait,

I can explain.

So when this drama was a big hits back when it was first aired, I was one of those antis who refused to watch it because why would we? When we already seen both Meteor Garden 1 & 2, right? So yeah, I didn’t watch it then. Oh boy, if only you could see the bite on my ass that Karma left me with …

Lee Min Ho in his recent drama, Legend of the Blue Sea, surprisingly [for me] looks SO handsome. Like, boyfriend material handsome. I was like, when did he suddenly looks THIS GOOD? I blame the trench coat.

Anyway, since I’ve never seen his drama before, so I thought, I should see his previous works before I started LOTBS. I must say, I can see why lots of people loves it. BOF made us revisit our beloved Meteor Garden but at the same time BOF managed to make us feel like watching a new story.

Of all the other F4 members, Lee Min Ho is the closest that resembles one of Meteor Garden’s cast. The one and only Jerry Yan a.k.a Dào Míng Sì. I’m amazed to be quite honest. Kudos to the casting producer and LMH of course for did justice to the character.

What I love about BOF was, the bullying scenes were not gruesome like it were in Meteor Garden. To this day I still cringing whenever I think about that scene where Shāncài got beaten up just because Dao Ming SI thought she was cheating on him. So I appreciate that BOF tone that scene down.

I enjoyed this drama more than I ever thought it would be. No wonder it became such a phenomenon.

I have so many favorite parts from this drama, but my number one was when Geum Jan-di drown herself in order to trigger Gu Jun-pyo’s memories of her. It was just so sweet and I almost, ALMOST, shed a tear.

This drama taught me that you don’t always end up with your soulmate. Sometimes, soulmate is just there because your significant other can’t.

My favorite song from the soundtrack .
